RBI leads harmful algal bloom training sessions to educate municipality and agency staff on how to safely collect samples and work near water containing toxin-producing cyanobacteria blooms (cyanoHABs). Training materials developed by RBI effectively teach staff to recognize a harmful algal bloom, proper protective equipment to wear when working around contaminated water, and how to prevent exposure to cyanotoxins if working in waterbodies that may develop cyanoHABs. As part of the training, RBI also provides background information on the factors that cause cyanoHABs and instructs staff on actions to implement if they suspect a cyanoHAB is present on-site.
